From September, in October and sometimes even in November if the climate allows it, the pear picking takes place.

Between those that fall to the ground and are consumed quickly, those that show traces of disease, worms or fungi, a healthy part of the harvest can be stored throughout the winter.

In the right conditions, storing pears can allow you to eat them until the end of winter or even the beginning of spring.

From picking to storage, here are the rules to follow for optimal conservation of pears.

Varieties of pears that keep well

While all pears can be kept for several months in good conditions, there are varieties that keep more easily, some of which can be enjoyed until spring.

Picking pears

This is an important step because it has a direct impact on the conservation of pears.

No need to pick up pears that have fallen to the ground because they are very fragile and they usually only last a few days. You have to eat them quickly or turn them into ’pear alcohol, Pears Belle Helene, a yogurt and pear cake, of roasted pears with speculoos or even the pear compote.

You have to pick the pears from the tree but, be careful, you have to choose them well and perform this operation in dry weather.

  • Choose pears that are not too ripe or too green
  • Slightly lifting the pear, make 1/4 turn of the tail
  • If the pear comes off, it is good to pick
  • We place it delicately in its basket so as not to damage it

The pears that will keep best

In order to make sure that each pear is free from disease or fungus, we will proceed to a first step to select the pears of 1st choice.

  • Spread the pears without them touching each other to avoid possible contamination
  • Then observe the pears after a short week
  • Eliminate pears that show signs of weakness (blackening, coloring, browning, spots, etc.)
  • Isolate the most beautiful pears, those that appear the healthiest

Storage and preservation of pears for the winter

Under the right conditions, you will be able to store your pears beyond Christmas, sometimes until spring.

  • Spread the pears without them touching on crates or shelves.
  • Make sure the air circulates properly around the pears
  • Store the crates away from light and humidity and ideally at a temperature of around 10 °
  • Inspect your pears regularly to remove whatever spoils first as quickly as possible.
